A familiar world map can quietly shape how people imagine global scale, influence, and distance. The United Nations General Assembly’s recent endorsement of more proportionally accurate map projections therefore carries significance beyond cartography: it places long standing visual assumptions about the world under renewed scrutiny.
A Shift From Mercator to Equal Earth
The General Assembly adopted the African led “Correct the Map” resolution by 164 votes to one, with six abstentions. Sponsored by Togo and supported by African Union members, the nonbinding measure encourages governments, schools, international organizations, and technology companies to use Equal Earth and other equal area projections when the relative size of landmasses is relevant. It does not prohibit the Mercator projection, nor does it require a single replacement for all mapping purposes.
The initiative responds to the widespread use of the Mercator projection, developed in 1569 by Gerardus Mercator. Its design was particularly useful for navigation because lines of constant compass direction appear straight, enabling mariners to plot courses more easily. However, this advantage produces a major tradeoff: areas farther from the Equator appear increasingly enlarged, while equatorial areas appear relatively reduced.
The contrast between Africa and Greenland illustrates the issue clearly. On many Mercator maps, the two appear broadly comparable in scale. In fact, Africa is about 14 times larger than Greenland. Equal Earth, a projection developed in 2018, is designed to preserve relative area more effectively, although, like every flat representation of a globe, it necessarily distorts other features such as shape, distance, or direction.
Why Representation Matters
The resolution reflects an argument that maps are not merely technical tools. They are also widely used educational, media, and institutional representations that can influence perceptions of countries and regions. Togo’s foreign minister, Robert Dussey, argued before the vote that maps shape collective understanding by guiding education and influencing the imagination.
For African states supporting the measure, the issue is therefore connected to the visibility of Africa’s geographic scale, diversity, resources, and economic potential. A continent that appears smaller on commonly used maps may be perceived differently by students, audiences, and decision makers who encounter those representations repeatedly. The resolution frames this concern as a matter of more accurate global representation rather than a change in geography itself.
At the same time, the vote does not establish that any one projection can provide a complete or neutral visual account of the planet. Converting a spherical Earth into a flat image always requires compromise. Mercator prioritizes direction, making it useful for maritime and aerial navigation, while Equal Earth prioritizes the comparative area of territories. The practical implication is that map selection should depend on purpose, rather than treating one projection as universally suitable.
A Symbolic Vote With Practical Limits
The resolution’s immediate legal effect is limited because it is nonbinding. Its importance rests more on setting a norm and encouraging changes in classrooms, publications, official documents, and digital platforms. Togo has indicated that it intends to revise geography materials in its schools by the end of the year and promote broader adoption through discussions with African Union members and other supporters.
The debate also revealed differing political interpretations. The United States cast the only vote against the measure, describing it as ideological and arguing that the Assembly should prioritize other international concerns. Six states abstained. Ukraine and the European Union raised concerns about how some Equal Earth maps might display contested or occupied territory, while emphasizing that the resolution concerns relative land area rather than sovereignty or recognized borders.
A Final Note
The UN vote will not alter borders, physical geography, or the navigational value of Mercator maps. It may, however, encourage a more deliberate public conversation about how visual conventions shape global understanding. The broader lesson is straightforward: maps are essential tools, but the purpose and limitations of each map should be made visible alongside the image itself.
