Kharg Island is Iran’s oil lifeline and a dangerous pressure point for Washington.

A small island off Iran’s southern coast has suddenly become one of the most strategically important pieces of real estate in the Middle East. Kharg Island, which is  little known outside energy and military circles, is now at the centre of growing speculation after Trump suggested the US could consider taking it as pressure mounts over Iran and the Strait of Hormuz.

If you ask why, it is simply because Kharg Island is Iran’s oil artery. Though tiny in size, it handles the overwhelming majority of Iran’s crude oil exports, making it one of the most economically valuable locations in the country. Oil from the Iranian mainland is sent through pipelines to the island, where it is loaded onto giant tankers bound largely for Asian buyers, especially China. Its deep surrounding waters allow very large crude carriers to dock easier, which is something much harder to do along Iran’s shallower coastline.

That is why Washington sees Kharg as not just an oil terminal, but as a pressure point. If the US were to seize, blockade or disable the island, it could sharply reduce Iran’s export earnings and squeeze a major source of funding for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). It would also give the US a forward position in the Gulf at a time when the Strait of Hormuz remains at the heart of regional tensions.

But what sounds straightforward on paper would be highly risky in reality. Trump has claimed Kharg is lightly defended and could be taken easily, yet reports suggest Iran has recently reinforced the island’s defences, including additional personnel, air-defence systems and coastal obstacles. Tehran has also warned that any American landing would trigger retaliation, potentially widening the conflict far beyond the island itself.

There is also a global economic risk. Kharg is so central to Iran’s exports that any disruption there could send another shock through oil markets, worsening the broader energy fallout from the Gulf crisis. That helps explain why US strikes have reportedly focused on military assets while stopping short of destroying the island’s oil infrastructure.

In short, Kharg Island matters because it combines economics, energy and war in one vulnerable place. If the US wants leverage over Tehran without marching deep into mainland Iran, this island could be the most obvious and dangerous target.
